A Comprehensive, Mixed-Methods Examination of the Impact of Playground Surfaces on Playability and Child and Community Wellbeing
Overview
This study examines the role of playgrounds as health and wellbeing promoting assets in communities, and in particular, their critical contributions to active and social play among children — constituting two physical and mental health enhancing behaviors. The study seeks to (1) use an evidence-informed approach to define and operationalize the construct of ‘playground playability’; (2) examine if playground surfacing materials play a role in optimizing playability, and if this varies by neighborhood level socioeconomic status; and (3) assess child caregiver perceptions of community well-being and safety across different types of playground surfaces.
